Camacha is a village and seat of the Parish of Camacha, in the Municipality of Santa Cruz, a parish with an area of ​​19.58 km² and 6239 inhabitants (2021 census), with a population density of 318.6 inhabitants/km².

It is located at latitude 32.7 (32°42') North and longitude 16.84 (16°49'20") West, being at an altitude of approximately 700 meters. Camacha has a road that connects Funchal and Santo Antônio da Serra. The main activity is agriculture.

Patrimony
In Camacha there are four main monuments; the Camacha Main Church, the Camacha Main Church, the Rochão Church and the São José Chapel.

The Camacha Mother Church features religious, baroque and neoclassical architecture. The church was subject to reconstruction and is considered a Property of Municipal Interest.

The Camacha Mother Church was built at the end of the 18th century by provision of the Royal Treasury granted by Queen D. Maria I in response to a request from the population presented by the Royal Treasury Board. It was built on the same site as the Ermida de S. Lourenço built by Francisco Gonçalves Salgado at the end of the 17th century.

Inside there is a Baroque altarpiece in the Johannine style and a Neo-Baroque revival. There are also neoclassical tiles surrounding the neoclassical triumphal arch and paintings on the ceiling of the nave from the beginning of the 20th century. In the west there is a bell tower and two side chapels. These chapels were built at the beginning of the 20th century.
The Parish Church of Camacha was inaugurated on August 10, 1997 by the Bishop of the Diocese of Funchal, D. Teodoro de Faria and the Parish Priest, João Ferreira and is dedicated to São Lourenço, the patron saint of the parish. The Church features modern architecture whose exterior looks like a tent. The seven pillars present in the center of the altar remember the seven sacraments instituted by Christ.

The Parish of Rochão was inaugurated in 1961, by the Diocesan Bishop D. David de Sousa and its patron saint is Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Its objective is to allow the faithful easier and faster access to the Church and better participation in the life of the community.

The Chapel of São José da Camacha was built in 1922, commissioned by Abel Ferreira de Nóbrega, and its inauguration was on March 19, 1924. It is currently run by the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Victories. It has a beautiful main altar and is very well preserved. It is considered Heritage of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The Conselheiro Aires de Ornelas square, better known as Largo da Achada, is the gateway to the village of Camacha. This area is surrounded by trees, has gardens and a playground. It was in 1875 that football was played for the first time in Portugal in Largo da Achada. Young Harry Hinton, who was British introduced this game. It was on his father's farm that he explained the rules of the game to his friends. The ball he brought from England. From then on, the kids spread the new game everywhere. This square is surrounded by cafes, terraces, the Casa do Povo, the church and other commercial and historical spaces.

Camacha is marked in the history of Madeira as the first place where football was played in Portugal, in 1875, when a British student living in Madeira, Harry Hinton, introduced this sporting practice.

Camacha has numerous paths. These paths are very useful for people who don't have a car, who can cut corners on their way back or when leaving home. Furthermore, most elderly people do not have a car or any means of transportation. In tourist terms, these paths are also relevant, because walking on these paths is appreciating the beauty of the nature of this parish. The paths are:

• Levada dos Tornos.

The parish of Camacha is a place full of stories and customs. Belonging to the municipality of Santa Cruz, it stands at an altitude of approximately 700 metres, and enjoys the unique characteristics of the island's rurality.

A quiet and picturesque parish, Camacha is known for keeping alive many of its ancient customs and traditions. Thus, throughout the centuries there were industries that, from early on, became associated with this parish. Handicrafts, particularly wickerwork, contributed largely to the establishment of a unique industry in the world and, in the golden years of production, the parish was even in the mouths of the world, by exporting beautiful and handcrafted wicker pieces to various continents. However, one cannot talk about Camacha without mentioning its folklore. Between songs and dances, the eye-catching skirts of the viloas, with a red ground colour and colourful vertical stripes swirl, immortalised as one of the region's symbols.

At Camacha, besides culture, you can also experience Nature. Levada da Serra do Faial crosses the whole parish, making it possible to walk along pleasant trails in communion with the local fauna and flora.
