With an exuberant biodiversity and clear waters, the Garajau Partial Natural Reserve is one of the most special places in Madeira Island, where Nature reigns supreme with all its beauty and serenity. It is in this emblematic area that we find the Cristo Rei Viewpoint.

Located in the parish of Caniço, municipality of Santa Cruz, this observatory offers a panoramic perspective over the natural heritage of Garajau, part of Funchal Bay, and also Caniço de Baixo, an important tourist centre. In addition, visitors have access to a privileged view over the Atlantic Ocean.

The Cristo Rei Viewpoint owes its name to the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus built on this spot. It is an imposing sculpture of Jesus Christ, with open arms, facing the ocean.

GARAJAU BEACH

Several places in the archipelago of Madeira surprise visitors with their idyllic outlines. Garajau Beach, integrated into a marine reserve, is one of those places. Its natural conditions are perfect for scuba diving.

This bathing area is located in the Garajau Partial Natural Reserve, created in 1986 to protect the rich biodiversity of these waters and thus prevent the desertification of the seabed. Fishing is currently prohibited in this protected area and navigation is subject to various restrictions.

The calm and clear waters of Garajau Beach are, of course, widely sought after by scuba diving enthusiasts. Here, scuba divers take advantage of the unique opportunity to come into contact with a rich fauna, namely large species such as for example, the dusky grouper (Epinephalus guaza) or the giant oceanic manta ray (Mobula birostris)).

Garajau Beach can be reached by cable car. There, bathers will find various support facilities, such as toilets, changing rooms and a first-aid station. In addition, you can enjoy a pleasant meal with the Atlantic in the foreground, in the restaurants of this bathing complex.

The waters that bathe Madeira's east coast are known for their transparency and clearness. Reis Magos Beach offers bathers the opportunity to enjoy some invigorating dips in this crystal-clear sea, surrounded by a seductive landscape.

Located in the parish of Caniço, in Santa Cruz municipality, this bathing resort has a series of facilities that allow visitors to enjoy a comfortable and fun experience. This small beach has facilities such as a parking area, toilets adapted for people with disabilities, an area suitable for practicing sports, and parasols.

Reis Magos Beach also has a restaurant and bar, so bathers can enjoy a drink or a meal with a privileged view over the Atlantic. This beach is also supervised by lifeguards and has a first-aid station.
Despite being a pebble beach, quite common on the island, there is a concrete sunbathing area and a pier.
Lastly, it should be noted that Reis Magos Beach has been recognized for the excellence of its waters, as it annually hoists its Blue Flag.

ROCA MAR BATHING COMPLEX

Near the eastern end of the Garajau Nature Reserve, you will find the Roca Mar Bathing Complex, which is part of a hotel unit. Situated at the base of a cliff and enjoying the transparency of the area's waters, this bathing space is characterized by its rocky beach and by its solarium areas, on rocky levels.

From the Roca Mar Bathing Complex, you can access the sea via stairs, but for those who prefer it, there is a saltwater pool in which it is possible to swim comfortably. Equipped with almost all support services and structures, this complex, unfortunately, cannot guarantee access to users with reduced mobility, as the only way to enter the bathing area is via some stairs, given this area's rugged orography.

This is an option to be taken in Caniço, in the municipality of Santa Cruz, when the hot days are at their peak and all you feel like doing is taking a dip in the sea. Come and spend a memorable day in the crystal-clear waters of the Roca Mar Bathing Complex.

CANICO MOTHER CHURCH
32.651851, -16.840042

The Caniço Main Church was built in 1783, under the responsibility of Father José Lomelino Barreto.
The church is characterized by a transitional architecture between Baroque and Rococo, featuring a longitudinal plan and a single nave, a main facade with a cornice gable, with a stonework portal with a full arch, topped by a large window with the royal coat of arms.
The large bell tower,  is almost unique in the region, standing out perfectly in the entire landscape of the wide Caniço valley.
The interior features white and gold carvings, and you can see paintings by Nicolau Ferreira.

Until the end of 1835, this parish belonged to the Municipality of Funchal, and in that year was incorporated into the Municipality of Santa Cruz, from which the town is 8 kilometers away.

At first there were two churches: one on the left bank of Ribeira, dedicated to Santo Antão; another on the right bank, of the invocation of the Holy Spirit, both, however, with the same parish priest.
Father José Lomelino Barreto, who remained there for more than 40 years, offered the land for the construction of the current Church, successor to the other two primitive ones, which were falling into ruin. The first stone of the current parish temple was blessed on August 2, 1779, and the new Church was solemnly blessed on October 28, 1783. The tombstone preserved on the frontispiece is as follows:
“Sancto Spiritui Paraclito atque divo António Abbati sacrum Maria 1ª lusitan, regina fidelis equestris D. N. J. C. ordinis gubernat aedificavit: insulano tribunali regio curante. Anno CIC.IDCCLXXX regni autem IIII”.
The Igreja Matriz do Caniço belongs to the Parish of Caniço and has the Holy Spirit and Santo Antão as patron saints, and by tradition Our Lady of Livramento is also venerated and has a party in her honor.
